China: China is the market leader with over 20 million electric cars, as of 2024. Last year, it sold approximately 11 million electric cars, which was nearly half of all the vehicles sold. Tax benefits, generous trade-in schemes, and homegrown giants such as BYD are driving the boom in China. (Image: Pexels)
US: The United States of America is on the 2nd spot, with an EV fleet of around 7 million. Last year, around 1.6 million electric cars were sold in the country. Tax incentives such as Inflation Reduction Act are expected to drive the boom. (Image: Pexels)
Germany: Leading the EV market in Europe is Germany, with around 1.4 million cars. However, the share of EVs in new car sales dropped slightly, from 30% in 2022 to 25% in 2023, mainly due to reduced incentives. (Image: Pexels)
France: Closely following Germany is the European nation of France. It has around 1.3-1.4 million EVs. With a pledge to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2040, the country is also backing the adoption of EVs with incentives such as the bonus-malus system; it rewards buyers of clean cars while penalizes polluting vehicle owners. UK: Rounding up the top five is the United Kingdom, with an estimated 1.3 million electric cars on the road. Roughly, 25% of new car sales are electric, as reported by IEA. Despite subsidy reductions, consumers have shown interest in purchasing EVs. (Image: Pexels)
Norway: Despite its small population, Norway is the leader when it comes to per capita EV ownership. By 2024, around 900,000 EVs were estimated on the roads; surprisingly, 95% of new car sales were electric. The country’s aggressive reliance on renewable energy overall is a contributing factor. Sweden: The Nordic country’s EV fleet is around 550,000. Almost 40% of its car sales in 2023 were electric, making it one of the fastest-growing EV markets in Europe. Strong rebates, the government’s eco-friendly policies are a few factors contributing to the boost. (File Photo)
Canada: Canada also boasts around 550,000 electric cars, with EVs accounting for about 9-10% of new sales by early 2023. Federal rebates and expanding charging networks are the factors behind the steady growth. (File Photo)
South Korea: The Asian nation rounds up the top 10, with around 500,000 EVs. Electric cars make up less than 7% of new sales, showing there’s huge potential in growth.
