The Maharashtra state government has approved the revised cost for extending the Vanaz-Ramwadi Metro line further west to Chandni Chowk and east to Wagholi.
This long-awaited project, which had faced multiple delays, is now ready to move forward.
Alongside, two additional stations – Balajinagar and Bibwewadi – have also been cleared on the proposed underground Swargate-Katraj route.
As per Hindustan Times, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, expressed his gratitude, calling it “a big step towards easing Pune’s travel woes.
How Much Will It Cost?
The revised project cost is pegged at Rs 3,626.24 crore, which is lower than the earlier estimate of Rs 3,756.58 crore. The funding will be shared in the following way:
- State and Centre: Rs 479.71 crore each
- Loans: Around Rs 1,867 crore through bilateral and multilateral agencies
- PMC: Rs 24 lakh contribution
- State loan: Rs 656 crore as interest-free support for land acquisition and rehabilitation
Officials said the cost reduction was achieved without cutting back on key infrastructure.
Who Will Execute the Project?
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) will carry out the work. The project will include modern facilities such as signalling, rolling stock, platform screen doors, cyber security measures, and smooth integration with other modes of transport.
Why Does This Matter to Pune?
A senior MahaMetro official highlighted that the extension to Chandni Chowk and Wagholi will greatly benefit daily commuters by reducing congestion and offering a cleaner, faster travel option.
The expansion is expected to ease traffic pressure on the city’s busy roads while encouraging more people to shift from private vehicles to public transport.
