Mizoram Becomes 4th NE State Capital To Get Rail Link, Bairabi-Sairang Line Nears Completion

The central government has raised the budget for northeast rail infrastructure to Rs 10,440 crore for 2025–26.

Mizoram’s capital city, Aizawl, is now connected to India’s national railway network for the first time.
This major milestone was achieved through the new Bairabi–Sairang railway line, as reported by Indian Express.
With this, Mizoram becomes the fourth northeastern state to have its capital linked by rail, joining Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
What Is the Bairabi–Sairang Line?
The Bairabi–Sairang railway line spans 51.38 kilometres and comes with a revised budget of Rs 5,021.45 crore.
- The project is almost ready, with 94.52 percent physical work completed and 97.13 percent of the budget used, according to the Ministry of Railways.
- The line includes 32 tunnels, 144 bridges, 15 covered cut tunnels, five road overbridges, and six underpasses.
- The route is split into four sections:
- Bairabi–Hortoki (already commissioned in July 2024)
- Hortoki–Kawnpui
- Kawnpui–Mualkhang
- Mualkhang–Sairang
The formal inauguration of the line is expected after 17 June, pending inspection by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS).
Why It Matters
This line is part of a larger mission to connect all Northeast state capitals by rail. It will:
- Reduce travel time between Mizoram and Assam by 3–4 hours
- Boost local trade and tourism
- Enhance development in remote areas
