Indian Railways To Fit All Coaches And Engines With CCTV Cameras, Here’s Why | Auto News
Last Updated:
Big security upgrade aims to stop crime and make passengers feel safe on every train.
Each locomotive will have six cameras to keep a close watch on activities.
In a major move to boost passenger safety, Indian Railways has announced it will install CCTV cameras in all of its 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives.
The decision comes after the alarming gangrape of a woman in an empty train coach in Panipat. Officials say this initiative is set to change the way safety is managed on trains, as per TOI.
What’s the Plan?
Each coach will be fitted with four CCTV cameras – two at the entry points and two in the common areas. Importantly, cameras will not be installed inside private cabins or washrooms, ensuring passenger privacy is not affected. Locomotives will have six cameras each.
The cameras are designed to capture high-quality footage even when trains move at speeds over 100 km/h and in low-light conditions. This means safety checks won’t be compromised, day or night.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials to use only the best-in-class equipment. He has also asked them to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used with CCTV footage, in partnership with the IndiaAI Mission. This could help detect unusual behaviour and stop crimes before they happen.
All cameras will be certified by a recognised authority to ensure top quality.
Why This Matters
Though Indian Railways had already been running pilot projects, this full-scale rollout follows the positive feedback from the Northern Railway zone. Officials believe the move will not only prevent crimes but also give passengers peace of mind while travelling.
