Tata Motors, a big name in India’s electric vehicle scene, is once again turning heads with whispers about the long-awaited Altroz.ev.
While the brand has electric versions of models like the Nexon, Tigor and Punch, the popular Altroz hatchback has remained petrol-only — until now.
Originally unveiled as a concept in 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show and later at the 2020 Auto Expo, the Altroz.ev was shelved due to technical challenges.
But fresh industry sources suggest the EV project is back under consideration, and this time with a smarter approach.
What Caused the Delay?
The main issue was fitting the battery under the car’s floor. To do this, Tata Motors would either have to lower the ground clearance, making the car impractical for Indian roads, or raise it, which would impact stability. As a result, plans for the Altroz.ev were put on hold for years.
A New Platform: All You Need To Know
Now, as per Motoroctane, Tata plans to solve this problem using the Acti.ev platform, which currently underpins the Punch.ev. This platform is more flexible for battery placement and design upgrades. With an updated Acti.ev in the works for the facelifted Punch.ev — including a bigger battery option — the Altroz.ev will likely follow the same blueprint.
While the Altroz.ev will borrow its battery tech from the Punch.ev, its design will largely mirror the recently updated Altroz. Expect sleek LED headlamps, connected LED tail lamps, flush door handles, and a more EV-specific front end with a closed grille and unique alloy wheels.
Inside, the car will sport a light cabin theme, much like the Altroz facelift, with new tech features to match modern EV expectations.
