Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday officially opened India’s largest automobile cargo terminal at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar facility in Haryana.
The Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal is a key step in boosting rail-based cargo movement and improving logistics efficiency, as per Mathrubhumi.
Key Details
- The cargo terminal is linked to the Patli railway station through a 10-kilometre dedicated electrified rail corridor.
- This corridor is a part of the 121.7-kilometre Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, developed by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC).
- Spread across 46 acres, the terminal includes four full-length tracks for rakes and one engine escape line, with a total track length of 8.2 kilometres.
Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, highlighted:” Aligned to the PM’s GatiShakti National Master Plan, the company’s second in-plant railway siding facility signifies a landmark achievement in its green logistics journey. We are also highly thankful to Government of Haryana and Hon’ble Chief Minister for their timely support and guidance on this project.”
Cost & Capacity: Rs 800 Crore Investment for 4.5 Lakh Vehicles Annually
- The terminal was built at a cost of Rs 800 crore.
- HRIDC contributed Rs 684 crore, with the remaining funded by Maruti Suzuki.
- It can handle the loading of up to 4.5 lakh cars per year, boosting rail-based automobile logistics.
Railway Upgrades Announced
During the inauguration, Minister Vaishnaw also shared updates on future developments:
- Indian Railways is planning to manufacture new 16 and 20-coach Main Line EMU trains for better passenger services.
- The Amrit Bharat Express fleet will grow with six more trains, as 50 new trains are currently being produced.
- Vande Bharat services will soon reach new destinations, expanding the semi-high-speed network further.
